Help – My Dental Crown Came Off!

Dental crowns are designed to seamlessly integrate with your smile, providing superior protection for weak or damaged teeth. So what happens if your crown comes off? The good news is that, in many cases, your crown can be saved. Contact Dr. Rick Dentistry immediately for expert guidance and immediate care.

Why Would a Crown Fall Off?

Crowns can become loose and fall off for various reasons, including the following:

  • Improper Fit: If your crown does not fit snugly on the tooth, it can provide small areas for harmful bacteria to flourish, weaken the tooth, and eventually cause the crown to loosen and fall out.
  • Wear and Tear: Trauma, injury to your teeth, consuming sticky foods, or biting down on hard objects may damage your restoration and cause it to come loose.
  • Decay: Tooth decay beneath a crown is another reason your restoration may become loose – here, we must treat the decay before replacing the crown.
  • Bruxism or Grinding: Constant grinding or clenching of teeth (bruxism) can also lead to the loss of a crown, which is why we typically recommend wearing a night guard during sleep.
  • Bonding: Over time, the bonding cement holding your crown in place can deteriorate and weaken, causing the crown to loosen and fall out.

What Should You Do If a Dental Crown Comes Off?

Here are things you should do in the event a crown comes off:

  • Save the Crown: If you can locate the crown, clean it with water and keep it in a clean container.
  • Contact Dr. Rick Dentistry: Contact our office right away, and we will make every attempt to see you as soon as possible.
  • Protect Your Tooth: Use over-the-counter dental adhesive or temporary cement to temporarily secure the tooth until you can visit our office.
  • Continue Brushing and Flossing: Continue brushing and flossing while avoiding the area around the missing crown.

What to Expect During Your Visit?

Dr. Rick will begin by evaluating your unique needs and recommend the best course of action to restore your smile. If the crown is intact and there is no underlying infection, he will clean the area and reattach your restoration.

If you have tooth damage or infection, Dr. Rick will repair the damage before restoring the tooth. Moreover, if the crown has signs of damage or wear, our experienced cosmetic dentist may recommend replacing it with an aesthetic CEREC one-hour porcelain crown. You’ll leave our office with a healthy, beautiful, and functional smile!
