Back to School

Back to School Means a Visit to the Dentist

It’s that exciting time of the year! It's back to school time! Time for new haircuts, new backpacks, new school supplies, new school clothes, and best of all, getting ready for a spectacular new adventure! While you are busy preparing for an awesome school year, make sure you make time for your child's back-to-school dental checkup! Have your child enter the new classroom with the best smile forward!

Children and Tooth Decay

Did you know that today, tooth decay is the most common chronic disease in US children? More than 40 percent of children suffer from tooth decay by the time they start kindergarten! Kids with toothaches have a hard time focusing and being productive in school.  A dental visit before school startup will ensure we catch and treat any problem before it progresses and will help prevent any missed school days due to dental issues.

How Often Should Your Child Visit the Dentist?

You should schedule your child's first dental appointment around the time the first tooth erupts, but no later than age one. Just like adults, children need to go in for routine checkups every six months. Prevention in children is vital to ensure that when the permanent teeth are ready to come in, they come in sound and healthy. Back to school is a perfect time to call us and schedule your child’s routine exam and cleaning!

What Happens During the Back-to-School Dental Visit?

We will begin by reviewing your child’s dental and medical history. We will examine the teeth, gums, jaws, and oral tissue. We will make sure that everything is developing as it should by looking at the shape of your child’s bite and how the teeth are lining up. We will also look out for any potential orthodontic issues.

During the visit, we will take x-ray images if needed to take a closer look at the teeth to ensure they are healthy and free of tooth decay. We will also clean and polish your child’s teeth, leaving them clean and fresh. As a preventative measure, we may apply a fluoride solution or dental sealants to prevent the formation of cavities.

Healthy Habits, Healthy Teeth

Back-to-school time is a great time to get healthy habits back on track. Make sure your children brush their teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once a day, preferably after dinner. Make this a fun time family time. Choosing a favorite "brushing" song can encourage your kids to brush for a whole two minutes!

Limit your child's sugary snacks and foods high in carbohydrates. These sticky or crunchy treats have lots of simple sugars that decay-causing bacteria thrive on. Pack healthy snacks or meals for your child to eat in school. Fruits, nuts, veggies, and cheeses are examples of healthy foods your child's teeth will thank you for!
