Sedation Dentistry: Understanding Your Options

At Dr. Rick Dentistry, we are committed to providing our valued patients with the best possible care in a calm and comfortable environment. We are pleased to offer sedation dentistry options designed to help even our most anxious patients relax in the dentist’s chair. We look forward to providing you with the anxiety-free care you deserve.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry aims at creating a calm and relaxed state with the help of medication. Though often called sleep dentistry, most forms of sedation will not make you fall asleep. If you are anxious about an upcoming dental appointment, talk to one of our team members. We will discuss your sedation dentistry options and do everything we can to ensure you are relaxed while receiving the outstanding dental care you need and deserve!

Is Sedation Dentistry Right for You?

Sedation dentistry may be ideal for the following:

  • Patients with high levels of anxiety or dental phobia
  • Patients who have difficulty getting numb with local anesthetics
  • Patients with overly sensitive teeth or a bad gag reflex
  • Patients requiring lengthy or complex dental treatments
  • Patients with special healthcare needs
  • Patients, especially children, who can’t sit still for long

What Are the Different Forms of Sedation?

Here is a look at our sedation dentistry options at Dr. Rick Dentistry:

Nitrous Oxide Sedation: Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is a mild form of sedation most commonly used during dental procedures. You’ll breathe nitrous oxide mixed with oxygen through a mask placed over your nose and mouth. You’ll feel calm and relaxed but remain responsive and aware of your surroundings. As soon as your treatment is over and we remove your mask, the sedative will wear off, allowing you to resume your everyday activities without interruption.

Oral Sedation: We will provide you with a pill to take the night before or the morning of your treatment. You’ll feel relaxed and sleepy but will be responsive to directions. Most of our patients do not remember much of their treatment once it’s done. The effects of oral sedation linger, so make sure to have a trusted adult drive you home and stay with you as you recover.

Intravenous (IV) Sedation: IV sedation is administered by an experienced anesthesiologist who will monitor you throughout the treatment for your safety. It provides you with a pain-free experience with little to no recollection of your treatment. You will need to rest and recover for the remainder of the day as the effects of the sedative wear off.

Which Sedation Dentistry Option Is Right for You?

The type of sedation that’s right for you will depend on different factors, including your dental history, level of anxiety, and length and complexity of treatment. Dr. Rick will explain your options and recommend the form of sedation ideal for your unique needs. Our goal is for you to enjoy high-quality, anxiety-free care.
